Some of the biggest problems with contractors can be easily avoided by simply checking out the contractor first and making sure that you’re hiring a reputable, well established and professional contractor.

While most states license electrical and plumbing contractors, only 36 states have some type of licensing and registration statutes affecting contractors, remodelers, and/or specialty contractors. The licensing can range from simple registration to a detailed qualification process. Also, the licensing requirements in one locality may be different from the requirements in the rest of the state.

Check with your local building department or consumer protection agency to find out about licensing requirements in your area. If your state has licensing laws, ask to see the contractor’s license and make sure that it’s current.

Since not all states require licensing you may have no choice in hiring an unlicensed contractor. This can still work out if you know what you are doing and he knows what he’s doing. The license doesn’t necessarily mean you get expertise, but it does mean you get leverage.

The Value of a Good Home Painting Contractor

Friday, October 17th, 2008

A good home painting contractor can be defined in many ways. The first, and most obvious way is that they perform their job well. They leave your home looking great, so that all of your neighbors envy your home’s good looks. The second, not so obvious way, is finding a home painting contractor who both cares for and respects your home. Many contractors do not see their clients’ homes as the owners see them. Finding a painter who is as committed to making sure the project turns out as good as you want it to is invaluable for your home’s remodel. They will usually put in the extra effort and be as invested in the project as the homeowner is, which usually results in excellent work and a beautiful finished product.

These contractors are not as hard to find as many believe them to be. Finding a good home painting contractor is as simple as getting a few estimates. Meeting a contractor at the estimate phase of the project will tell you lots in regards to their future behavior. Contractors who are disinterested and do not seem invested in the project will probably let you down. On the other hand, contractors who take an interest in the remodel and ask questions pertaining to how you would like the project to be done will usually leave your home looking fantastic.
